The Xiaomi Mi 9 which belongs to the top-tier Xiaomi flagship assembly called the Mi series, pack with its star-studded features such as a powerful processor, impressive camera setup, and supports up to 20W fast charging technology and to crown it all, it’s a whole load cheaper than phones with similar spec.
The Mi series is known to deliver the best of Xiaomi’s armoury. Without a doubt, the handset stands out from the pack with its star-studded features.
The hallmark of such attributes is tied to it’s Snapdragon 855 chipset, which makes it one of the first few smartphones to run on the blazingly fast chip.
Other features hugging the headlines are the in-display fingerprint sensor and triple rear camera systems.
Design and Display
The smartphone follows the current all-glass design build with a slightly curved glass back with an holographic effect gives it a distinct look and a comfortable feel.
Another sauce to this, is that transparent version is available, though it’s expensive.
The shinning rear panel feature a camera module at the top left which houses triple stack of cameras, arranged vertically, an LED flash just beneath the module and the brand name at the bottom.
Upfront is a 6.39-inch curved super AMOLED display which sports a teardrop notch which houses the selfie shooter. It measures 157.5 x 74.67 x 7.61mm dimensions accompanied with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 and an excellent weight of 173g unlike the chunky Motorola G8 power.
It screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 but offers no protection from water because there’s no official IP rating. This set it at apar from it’s rivals like Samsung.
Other features includes a 403PPI screen density, in-screen fingerprint sensor, bright display with 600 nits and HDR support.
The smartphone is available in Lavender Violet, Ocean Blue and Piano Black colour options.
The Mi 9 packs a sets of three-camera photography powerhouse like it’s competitor, the Huawei P30.
On the rear, the tri-lens camera array which is arranged vertically got a 48MP primary shooter which employs a 4-in-1 pixel binning that makes images come out better.
Assisting the main shooter is a 12MP telephoto lens and the 16MP ultra-wide lens.
On low light its cameras are not as sharp as Huawei P30 pro nor turn night into day like the Pixel 4.
On the front is a 20MP selfie cam with an f/2.0 sitting inside the teardrop notch.
Hardware and Software
The selling point of the Mi 9 smartphone is that it was one of the first devices to appear using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 hardware.
Powering this device is an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 accompanied by an Adreno 640 GPU for graphics and multitasking.
The smartphone ships with Android 9.0 Pie along with it’s custom MIUI 10 user interface
It’s MIUI lags behind which is the biggest drawback of the Mi 9.
The device offers two storage options, 6GB / 8GB RAM on 64GB / 128GB, but there’s no microSD slot for expansion, which is a let down.
The dual SIM feature a USB Type-C 1.0, NFC, Wi-Fi dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0 and sadly no 3.5mm headphone jack and no 5G network connectivity.
On paper its 3,300mAh battery may not sound cool but xiaomi did an excellent job with energy management on the chipboard ensuring that power consumption is minimal, thus, giving an adequate lifespan.
It also supports 27W charging via an optional power adapter and 20W wireless charging with its proprietary wireless charging pad.
