iPhone 12 Pro: Specification, Price and Review

iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 Pro is undoubtedly a blue-chip smartphone, but there’s not a lot that separates it from the standard iPhone 12.

The real selling point is it robust camera hardware just like the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Aside the camera, stainless frame built, colour and storage options, it is pretty the same as the standard model.

Design and Display

The iPhone 12 has veered off from the rounded design of previous iphone edition to a flat-edged, boxy design reminiscent of the iconic iPhone 4.

There’s a precision-milled matte glass back surrounded by a surgical-grade stainless steel band in contrast to the Aerospace-grade aluminum band on the standard model.

The matte glass back did not pick up fingerprints easily unlike the shiny glossy fingerprint-prone rear of the standard models. But on flip side, the stainless steel rail is smudge-prone compared to the aluminum rail.

The soft-touch glass on the back is home to a squared off camera bump on the top left and a centrally embossed Apple branding.

On the front, it got a bigger 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with less bezel and more screen compared to iphone 11 Pro’s 5.8-inch display.

The screen stretches edge-to-edge with exception to the Face ID notch boosted by 1170 x 2532 resolution, a 460 PPI density, a high 1200 nits nits peak brightness combined with Apple’s True Tone display tech, a DCI-P3 wide colour gamut, and support for Dolby Vision HDR content translates to a truly premium viewing experience.

It is appalling that the Pro version got same 60Hz refresh rate when Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and even the cheaper OnePlus 8T and other phones have 120Hz panel.

The display is protected by the new Ceramic Shield cover, which is simply glass infused with nano-ceramic crystals together with the stainless steel band surrounding it, offers 4x better drop performance than iphone 11.

Like the rest of the iPhone 12 series, it offers IP68 water and dust resistance and can survive submersion for up to 6 meters water depth for 30 minutes.

It is available in a more modest colour choices; Pacific Blue, Gold, Silver, and Graphite.

The Cameras

The Pro model beefs up the spec with a telephoto, LIDAR for faster autofocus in low-light and depth calculations, and some more encoding options for photo and video.

The triple camera configuration parades a 12MP wide angle camera equipped with a new seven-element and f/1.6 aperture, which results in 27 percent improved low-light performance for photos and videos.

Assisted by a 12MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.4 aperture, 120° field of view and a new lens correction technology, and a 12MP telephoto lens with f/2.0 aperture can deliver 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom.

The camera setup for both front and rear offers Deep Fusion and a new Smart HDR 3 feature for more true-to-life images with support for ProRAW file format, plus the much publicised LiDAR scanner for faster autofocus in low-light and improved Night mode.

For video, it supports 4K 60fps video and HDR video recording with Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames per second,

Upfront is a 12MP ƒ/2.2 front-facing TrueDepth camera system, embedded with Face ID 3D facial recognition system.

Hardware and Software

At heart, the Pro beats on Apple’s latest and greatest SoC, the A14 Bionic, the first mobile chipset with 5nm process. Apple says the 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU in the A14 Bionic chip are 50% faster than the fastest competing smartphone chips.

And the 16-core Neural Engine delivers an 80% increase in performance for machine learning tasks.

The iPhone 12 Pro boots on Apple’s latest itinerary, iOS 14, equipped with new features such as on-screen widgets, an app library, and improved Siri.

Storage

The Pro got 2GB more RAM memory and 256GB more internal storage than the iPhone 12 and iphone 12 mini. To cut the chase, it comes with 6GB RAM storage and up to 512GB of non-expandable storage.

Connectivity

The iPhone 12 Pro features a Lightning port, NFC, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi 6 and 5G connectivity with Ultra Wideband chip for spatial awareness.

Battery

Driving this device is the a non-removable 2815mAh battery which also powers the standard model but it’s pretty smaller than iphone 11 Pro’s 3,046 mAh battery and a far cry from Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro’s gargantuan battery.

Bear in mind that Apple does not include a charging brick in the iPhone 12 Pro box. Available in the box is a USB-C to Lightning cable. For faster charge, you can purchase a 20W faster charger at $19 or perhaps, opt for the new MagSafe wireless charger for $39.

MagSafe for iPhone 12 Pro

There’s a ring of magnets built at the back of your iphone. This lets you connect a variety of MagSafe accessories (chargers, cases and wallet accessories) to your iPhone, and it’ll intelligently recognize them.

It supports 15W wireless charging, which is an upgrade over the 7.5W charging available via standard Qi-based wireless chargers.
