iPhone 12 mini: Specification, Price and Review

iPhone 12 Mini

The iPhone 12 Mini presents as the world’s thinnest, smallest and lightest 5G smartphone.
It is also the cheapest of the 12 series, providing the tech company with a direct competitor to value-oriented flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and Google Pixel 5.

Apart from it’s battery capacity and display resolution, which makes perfect sense considering it’s small build, everything else, are exactly the same as the standard iphone 12.

Here’s all you need to know about the new iPhone 12 mini; specification, price and review.

Design and Display

The iPhone 12 design mirrors the iPhone 12 with notched all screen iphone X with squared-off aluminum design reminiscent of the iphone 4, together with the new iPad Pro and iPad Air design.

The glass on the front and rear are coated by Apple‘s new “ceramic shield” coating which offers superior durability and the nano-ceramic crystals in the glass boost drop durability by 4x, better than the iPhone 11 range.

Like the front, the back is flat with flush finish, though the camera bump won’t sit completely flat on a coffee table and a big apple logo at the center.

Upfront it boast of the new OLED Super Retina XDR display, delivering twice the peak brightness of the iPhone 11 at a staggering 1,200 nits of peak brightness. There’s also support for HDR video which is vastly improved with HDR 10, Dolby Vision and HLG.

Despite bearing same footprint as the iphone SE, apple was apple to squeeze in a bigger display of 5.4-inch as against the iPhone SE 4.7-inch display.

This was made possible by opting for a slimmer bezel around the display with 1080 x 2340 resolution, 476ppi density and a standard 60Hz refresh rate when the cheaper OnePlus Nord offers a higher resolution.

At 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4mm dimensions and 133g weight, it is smaller, more compact and lighter than the iPhone SE and being a 5G phone it succeeds the vivo X50 as thinnest 5G smartphone in the world.

The phone has IP68 protection, so it’s dust-proof, and can withstand dunks in water to a depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes.

It is available in five colorways: black, white, Product Red, green and blue.

Sadly there’s no switch to USB Type-C for charging, like the iPhone 12, it also comes with the same MagSafe magnetic ring on the back, which enables you to clip on cases, wallets, and wireless charging pads.

The new wireless charging tech for iPhone isn’t a new standard, and it’s compatible with Qi-charging, but here, magnets helps the charger snap into place so you don’t have to worry about finding the sweet spot.

The charger supports up to 15W fast wireless charging which is faster than Qi-charging and will be offered from a variety of third-party manufacturers in different form factors.

The Cameras

The dual rear camera comprises of 12MP f/1.6 wide angle main sensor and 12MP f/2.4 ultra-wide shooter with 120° field of view, which is exactly the same as the iPhone 12.

Apple claims that the faster aperture will deliver superior low-light photos with up to 27 percent more light and an improved Night mode armed with robust Cupertino’s latest computational photography knowhow and it’s powered by the A14 Bionic.

Video recording is capped at 4K 60fps for both front and rear cameras, though the iphone 12 Pro and iphone 12 Pro offers higher video resolution.

On the front is a 12MP f/2.2 TrueDepth shooter, housed in the front notch alongside the Face ID sensors.

Hardware and Software

On performance, it employs the first-ever 5-nanometer chip in the smartphone industry, the A14 Bionic, crunching 11 trillion operations per second on the Neural Engine.

It runs on Apple’s news software, iOS 14, which offers exciting new features including on-screen widgets, an app library, and improved Siri.

You get a 4G RAM which is 1GB more RAM memory than the iPhone SE 2020 with trio storage options of 64GB / 128GB and 256GB non-expandable internal storage.

It packs a single SIM blazing with 5G network as well as Bluetooth 5.1, Lightning port, NFC, Dual-Band WiFi and no 3.5mm headjack.

It is fuelled by a non-removable 2227mAh battey as against the 1821mAh on iPhone SE 2020 but lower than iPhone 12’s 2815mAh battery.

No Charging Brick

This is because apple has deserted the EarPods and charging brick.

As part of Apple’s ongoing environment-saving quest, wireless headphones and charging adapters are no more stuffed in the box across all iPhone 12 smartphones.

The options for charging includes a Lightning-to-USB-C cable in box.

Optional 20W fast wired power adapter, which is purchased separately.

MagSafe charger which comes in 12W instead of 15W according to Apple’s support document which is assumed to avoid overheating the small phone.
